April 2012 - Vaccine Center participates in the Louisiana Higher Education and Industry Collaborative Workshop on Biosciences in New Orleans

The Center attended the Industry~Academia Collaborative Biosciences Workshop held April 15th-16th, 2012 in New Orleans at the Marriott Renaissance Arts Hotel and Xavier University of Louisiana. This is the third in a series of workshops supported by the Louisiana Board of Regents and Louisiana EPSCoR. The goal of these workshops is to foster research and economic development through academic, government, and business partnership. This two-day event attracted close to 150 attendees and featured national and regional speakers from both industry and academia. The presentations and panel discussions revolved around addressing; the current strengths and weaknesses of the Louisiana environment in attracting and growing bioscience companies, the role bioscience companies need universities to play in this context, and identifying barriers to more active university engagement with companies.

Featured speakers addressed the current climate of partnerships nationally, internationally and within the State of Louisiana, and included the Program Officer from the National Science Foundation's SBIR/STTR Program. Industry representatives from Sanofi-Aventis provided insights into their current research portfolio and needs; venture capitalists discussed opportunities and challenges of raising capital for high tech university/industry bioscience businesses in Louisiana; and academic researchers addressed research innovations that are directly relevant to Louisiana's business and industry.

Several LVC representatives attended the workshop along with our local partners including the New Orleans BioInnovation Center and BioDistrict New Orleans and Center partner institutions Tulane, Xavier, and LSUHSC-NO. The Center also participated in the poster session in order to present and outline the Center's mission, initiatives and future directions to the diverse crowd. It is important the Center continue to participate in events that have the potential to create partnerships with outside groups involved in the broader local and regional biomedical community. The workshop provided an important opportunity for those from industry and research to come together and identify areas of continued collaboration and cooperation while putting on display the great strides Louisiana has made recently in the biosciences sector. The LVC was able to promote our program initiatives and successes to all attendees.
