Dr. Gregory Poland, Director of the Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, visted the LVC in January 2010 to meet with faculty and to present the first talk for 2010 in the Infection, Immunity and Vaccine Seminar Series. In addition to directing vaccine research at Mayo, Dr. Poland serves as Professor of Medicine, Infectious Disease, Molecular Pharmacology, and Experimental Therapeutics, and also directs the Immunization Clinic and the Program in Translational Immunovirology and Biodefense. He is also currently editor of the journal, Vaccine.

In his seminar entitled Vaccinomics & Personalized Vaccinology, Dr. Poland spoke to more than 100 attendees at LSUHSC-NO, and others remotely via Access Grid, about the past, present and future of vaccines. He dispelled many current myths and misconceptions regarding vaccination, applauding their overall efficacy and presented laboratory data in his newly minted area of vaccinomics, touching on the genetic basis of individual responses to vaccine immunogens. Advances in this direction, he believes, will move us towards personalized medicine, where the genetic make-up of an individual and their predisposition to certain ailments could ultimately allow for vaccines to be tailor-made to optimize their chances of protective efficacy.
